A new study suggests that taking finasteride can help people with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) reduce their prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels by up to 50% at the first sign of symptoms.
In a study published in the July/August issue of the journal Cancer Causes, researchers found that a combination of oral finasteride and a combination of the medication finasteride and a topical solution containing 1% finasteride reduced the risk of developing a new prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level of 1.2 ng/ml, and in men with BPH, it reduced the risk of developing prostate cancer by 30%.
“It may be that taking finasteride, which is the active ingredient in Propecia, can help to reduce the risk of developing BPH,” said lead author Dr. David M. Sturgess, professor of oncology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and director of the Cancer Prevention Program at the Mayo Clinic. “However, it’s important to note that finasteride has been associated with an increased risk of developing prostate cancer, so a lower dose and/or a longer treatment course may be necessary to achieve this goal.”
“While finasteride works by inhibiting the production of the hormone DHT, it also has some other properties that might help to mitigate the risk of prostate cancer in men with BPH,” he added. “The results of the study support the possibility that finasteride may play a role in reducing the risk of developing BPH by decreasing DHT levels in the body.”
According to Sturgess, “Our study suggests that if a patient was taking finasteride and taking the medication as part of their routine maintenance treatment regimen, the risk of developing a new prostate cancer was reduced by 30% and the risk of developing a new prostate cancer was decreased by 15%.”
While the study is in its final stages, it should be noted that it was published in the journal The Lancet, which reports the results of the study.
“The results of this study support the possibility that taking finasteride, which is the active ingredient in Propecia, can help to reduce the risk of developing a new prostate cancer,” said Sturgess.
The study, published in the July/August issue of the journal Cancer Causes, was conducted in collaboration with the Cancer Prevention Program of Mayo Clinic.

Finasteride 1mg tablets inhibit the amount of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in your body, allowing natural re-growth. This treatment is very effective in men with a mild to moderate amount of hair loss, not solely in the temple area and results are usually apparent after a few months; with significant improvements being recorded for up to five years after beginning treatment.
Propecia, manufactured by Merck, Sharp and Dohme (MSD), was introduced to treat this problem but the UK patent expired in October 2014 and therefore other pharmaceutical companies could then manufacture a generic equivalent of Propecia, called finasteride 1mg.
A lot of our customers prefer to continue with the brand that they have received previously, especially after having a hair transplant. This brand is usually the "Aindeem" brand. They have confidence in it and want to continue to take it.
Aindeem was manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Actavis but Actavis was acquired by Accord who supply finasteride with their own branding. Accord are manufacturing their brand to the same recipe as Actavis but after taking active breastfeeding, marketing an American license, and giving Actavis the green light, the printing process takes around three days.

If the symptoms are severe, or any of the symptoms do not improve after taking the drug for a while, you are advised to return to your original brand.

In very high doses, Finasteride could lead to an increased risk of certain side effects. These could include symptoms of menopause (such as decreased interest in sexual activity) and symptoms of osteoporosis. Therefore, you should consult your doctor if you miss a dose of Finasteride.
In the normal usage, these side effects can be mild and temporary. In some cases, in some people, side effects can become severe and last for a few days. If you get any of the following symptoms, stop taking Finasteride and seek immediate medical attention.
